Evanescence: Fallen

Evanescence

Perhaps beauty can be found in such things as darkness, melancholy, and ultimately sadness. It's an underlying theme with Evanescence. All that is glittery is not all that is beautiful. "Don't try to fix me, I'm not broken." Many of today's teens and young adults feel this but haven't the words to express it. I may not be joyous, but does that call for repair? Sadness is as much a part of the human experience as joy. Equally beautiful as well.

"Evanescence". It means "to vanish suddenly". Now, personally, this isn't too fitting. They appeared out of nowhere and made a noise when they showed up. Wind-Up Records did wise upon signing this dark rock/ethereal band from Alabama. The vocals of Amy Lee are high and professional while accompanied by the powerful and trebled guitar of Ben Moody. Also on guitar is John LeCompt and Rocky Gray on drums. For the most part, amazingly, Moody writes the lyrics. Many people find that Amy feels these emotions she sings about, but it's not so. You want the real emotional source, it's behind the lead guitar.

Today, depression is trendy, anger is desirable, and angst is the norm. Evanescence comes on the "gothic" scene pelting out purely poetic lyrics dealing with true human emotions that we deal with even more commonly. Emotions such as longing for a lost love in "Bring me to Life" and the what's and why's of a God not scientifically proven in "My Tourniquet".

This band created their art for themselves, for their own expression. Whether today's youth would buy it or not was not the issue. Their work is true. That is uncommon with the music floating across our airwaves screaming for us to hate anything traditional and scorn what is common. Evanescence tells you to do nothing and implies nothing as "wrong" or "right". They just relate to you, as you are.

In general, I would say that Evanescence did an excellent job but there is still room for improvement. More variation between musical styles, just a bit, would capture my attention more. Even though I was saturated a bit too much with one style, I did love this style. Only in moderation however. I give Evanescence's new album "Fallen" a 4.0 altogether.
